Nestled in the heart of the North Cascades, Ladder Creek Falls is a  natural wonder that offers visitors a unique blend of history, nature, and enchanting beauty. Located behind the Gorge Powerhouse in Newhalem, this hidden gem provides a refreshing woodland retreat and an up-close view of a spectacular waterfall.

The falls have a rich history dating back to the 1930s and '40s when J.D. Ross, the owner and developer of the hydroelectric project near Ross Lake, built a trail to showcase the area. Ross's vision transformed Ladder Creek Falls into a popular tourist attraction, complete with colorful nighttime illumination and music piped in on Friday evenings for visitors from Seattle seeking a night out.

Today, the magic of Ladder Creek Falls continues to captivate visitors. The light show, a 15-minute repeating program that runs from dusk until midnight year-round, remains a major draw. However, the falls are equally mesmerizing during daylight hours, offering a serene escape into nature.

As you approach the falls, you'll find well-marked signs near the powerhouse guiding you to trail. The path is paved and dotted with benches, making it accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities. As you meander along the trail, you'll be surrounded by exotic flora, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery.

The journey to the falls is as rewarding as the destination itself. The path winds through lush greenery, with the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step. Finally, you'll reach the misty base of the falls, where the cool spray offers a welcome respite on hot summer afternoons.

While the construction of the Powerhouse and dam upstream has reduced the volume of the falls, glacier-fed Ladder Creek still provides enough water for a year-round flow. This ensures that visitors can enjoy the falls' beauty regardless of the season.

After taking in the majestic views and perhaps snapping a few photos, you can return to your starting point via a small suspension bridge. This route offers a more direct path than the one you arrived on, adding a touch of excitement to your return journey.

For those needing a break or facilities, there's a restroom conveniently located in the powerstation building. This amenity allows visitors to comfortably spend more time exploring the area and enjoying the falls.

To reach this photographic paradise, set your GPS to milepost 120 along Highway 20. As you approach Newhalem, keep an eye out for the Gorge Powerhouse on your right. The parking area for Ladder Creek Falls is conveniently located just across the river from this landmark.

While in the area, consider also exploring another nearby short yet  rewarding trail: The Trail of the Cedars.
